McFLY Interviews

Band Interview By Sugarscape.com in 2008

You’ve been quiet for a while, we’ve missed you! Where have you been?
Dougie: Well we spent 10 weeks at the beginning of the year recording our new album in Australia which was an amazing experience. We left our record label at the beginning of the year as well so we’ve spent a lot of time making the new album and setting up our own record label.

That sounds like a brave step, why did you decide to set up your own record label?
Dougie: We basically wanted to take complete creative control over McFly and give ourselves an opportunity to do things a bit differently. We sort of felt like we were going through the motions a bit with the record label and we had the opportunity to leave so we thought it was perfect timing really. We ended up making the best album we’ve ever made in Australia.

How come you decided to record your album in sunny Australia?
Dougie: Our producer came up with the idea of recording out there and it worked out because of the exchange rate that it would cost just as much to record in London as it is to fly over to Australia and record the album. We rented an amazing house on the beach for 10 weeks. We just wanted to go away and have an experience as well rather than just going in and recording.

You must have met loads of celebs since you shot to fame, but have you ever been star struck?
Tom: Yeah quite a few times, we’ve all met a lot of our idols. Harry’s met a lot of his cricket idols and sporting idols. Danny’s met Roger Daltrey, I’ve met Greenday…
Dougie: Yeah we met The Queen! It was very funny; we got the giggles at the worst time. We were standing next to Cliff Richard and he was giving advice on what we should do. But I think we were just nervous.

Wow The Queen eh! What did she say to you?
Tom: Danny had a little chat with her actually.
Harry: You’re supposed to wait until she speaks to you. You’re just supposed to say Ma'am and then she says something so you can reply but you’re not supposed to talk to her. But Danny spoke before he was spoken to. He said: “You enjoy the show?”

Oh no really! Did she mind?
Danny: No, she just said to me: (he impersonates The Queen’s voice) “I’ve never been here before, this is beautiful isn’t it.”

We all saw you on The F Word recently, is Gordon Ramsay really as scary as he looks on TV?
Danny: He’s in your face, but he’s a nice guy.
Harry: He’s really cool; he’s really passionate about cooking obviously. He genuinely really wanted us to do really well. We had a lot of fun.

Are you guys any good at cooking?
Danny: I’m good if I’ve got the ingredients in front of me. I just never know what to get or what order to put it in, or how long to cook it for.
Dougie: I do cook a lot more than I used to now. Not amazingly well though.

Do you like to cook for a girl on a date?
Dougie: I wouldn’t no.
Tom: I made a heart shaped pizza for a girl on Valentines Day once.

Speaking of dates, what’s your idea of the perfect girl?
Danny: Jessica Alba.
Harry: I think someone you click with and get on really well with.
Tom: Someone who doesn’t go out, I like staying in.
Dougie: I would have to say Natalie Portman. But I don’t know if we’d get on, or if it would work out. She seems very clever. She’s an actress as well so it might freak me out because you’d never know if she was faking it.

Who do you fancy but know you shouldn’t?
Danny: The Queen.
Harry: Dougie. Tom used to fancy Sharon Osbourne.
Dougie:  I fancy Josh from Go:Audio.
Tom: Dot Cotton.

There’s no doubt about it, the girlies love McFly…how do you cope with all the girls swooning over you?
Harry: I don’t know it’s not too bad really, it’s cool. I don’t really feel that they do.
Tom: They all like Dougie so we’re fine.
Harry: They like our music which is nice. It can often be embarrassing but it depends on what kind of situation you’re in.

What’s the weirdest gift you’ve ever been given?
Harry: Fans need to start giving us some more weird gifts because for about four years we’ve always been stuck on this question.
Tom: Nothing tops the old sanitary towel that came through the post – that was pretty odd!
Harry: We need some weird presents please fans because we’re running out of answers for this question.
Dougie: But nothing disgusting please!
Harry: We get a lot of good presents like bracelets and teddies.

What’s the weirdest thing a fan has ever said?
Tom: Something a Japanese man said to us, because we couldn’t understand him.

You must have done hundreds of interviews since you first started out, what’s the silliest question you’ve ever been asked during an interview?
Harry: Probably that because how would you ever expect us to remember from the hundreds of interviews we’ve done.
Dougie: Probably something from Simon Amstell he used to ask us a lot of random questions on Popworld.

You appeared in the movie Just My Luck with Lindsay Lohan a couple of years ago…were you all pals with her?
Dougie: Yeah Facebook all the time (they all erupt with laughter).
Harry: She took us out for dinner which was nice.
Danny: We upset her, I think she didn’t like something we’d done; she didn’t speak to us for a while.
Dougie: She’s lovely though.

Do you see yourselves moving into movies in the future?
Harry: No it’s not something that we have planned at all. Obviously you can’t predict the future but our main goal in life is being in a band definitely.

Did you ever want to be celebs when you first started out?
Dougie: Fame is just a by-product of being successful in a band. It’s definitely something that we did not set out to gain.
Harry: Fame is overrated.
Tom: I think overrated is one of the most used lyrics ever in songs.

What have you got on your iPods at the mo?
Harry: I think Dougie’s laptop is the biggest iPod you’ll ever see.
Dougie: I lost my iPod.
Tom: Why don’t you just buy a new one?
Harry: It’s really bad how you always turn up with your bag and laptop bag; why don’t you just put your laptop in your bag?
Dougie: Because I like to put my bag in the boot.
Harry: What do you have in your bag?
Dougie: Like a spare t-shirt or something.
Your first album went double platinum, your second charted at number 1, you’ve had massive success with your third and you’ve also released a greatest hits. Then there’s The Brit award, Smash Hit award the list goes on! What’s left? You seem to have achieved it all.
Harry: There’s still a lot to come I think, this is definitely the best album we’ve ever done. I just think we want to try and appeal to a bigger audience and we feel like we’ve got the songs to do that.
Dougie: We’ve also got plans to do more international stuff with this album.

Which countries are you hoping to hit then?
Danny: There’s demand from Brazil, France. There’s demand from everywhere really.
Tom: We had a number one hit in Brazil and we’ve never even been there before. We now just really want to take time out to go and see these places.

Your new single One For The Radio is out July 14, what’s the song about…is it just one for the radio?
Tom: It’s basically about uniting all the people and saying that if you don’t like us then we don’t care because we are proud of who we are.

Your new album is tiled RADIO: Active, is there a bit of a radio theme going on there?
Tom: We were trying to come up with a load of words that sounded cool for our album title and me and Dougie were sitting there in my living room and he’d written down radio like five times on the page. I had Empire magazine and there was Hulk on the cover and I opened it up and the first word we read was radioactive.
Dougie: But we thought we would be clever and change the way it was written because it’s not radioactive like (he imitates something exploding). It means this radio is active.

You’re also releasing a 10 song edition of the album free with the Mail On Sunday on 20th July, that’s very generous of you to give it away for free…is there any particular reason why your giving it away as a freebie?
Danny: It’s a good opportunity for us to get us into three million homes in one day and for us that’s brilliant exposure. It’s great to take that opportunity and we’re looking forward to everyone hearing the new stuff.
Harry: Basically we really feel that this is our best album so it’s important for us for as many people as possible to listen to it and to get it out to people who wouldn’t necessarily buy Mcfly albums – so that’s why it’s such a great opportunity for us. All of our fans will hopefully go and buy it anyway.

Ghost Hunting with McFLY Interview By Unreality.co.uk in 2007

Why did you want to take part in the show?
Tom: We thought it would be fun…….we were wrong!
Dougie: I didn’t

Had you experienced any paranormal activity before you took part in the show?
Tom: No, not really. Harry saw a ghost once, and Dougie and I saw a UFO.
Dougie: I once saw the ghost of a cat’s bum.
Danny: No never.

Dougie, you seemed to be the most scared during the trip. Did you anticipate this?
Dougie: Well, I bought 10 pairs of boxers in case.

What was the scariest location you visited and why?
Tom: The mine - it was pitch black, wet and underground.
Dougie: The mine, because it was cold damp and very dark.
Harry: The castle, because it felt like we were in a real horror movie.
Danny: I think it was when I was in the hut in the forest on my own, I shat myself!

What was the most positive part of the show for you?
Tom: When it was over and we got back to the hotel.
Dougie: None of it.
Harry: Taking part in everything that I was asked to.
Danny: When Dougie ran into the wall in the lead mine.

Was there any part during the experience where you nearly walked out?
Tom: No, I wanted to finish the night.
Dougie: The whole thing.
Harry: Yes, once.
Danny: No, I wanted to go through with it all.

Tell me about the Ouija board experience?
Tom: The Ouija board wasn’t so bad, it was the stones being thrown at us that was f*cking scary!!
Dougie: It sucked, I crapped my pants.
Danny: Scary.

How did you find working with Yvette?
Tom: She was very nice in the end. Weird, but nice.
Dougie: I think she’s a witch and she keeps trolls locked up in her house.
Harry: She was great fun, awesome.

Tom - When at the castle you felt like you were being pushed. Why did you not tell Yvette about this as it was happening?
Tom - It was weird, but I wanted to be pushed harder and I thought if I told someone about it, it might stop.

Are you glad you took part in the show?
Tom: Yes.
Dougie: No.
Harry: Definitely.
Danny: Very glad, it was a great experience and I would love to do it again.

Do you now believe there is something out there?
Tom: Maybe…..we’ll have to come back and do it again to find out.
Dougie: Yes.
Harry: Definitely.
Danny: Something! Don’t know what though?

Have you had any further paranormal experiences since taking part in the show?
Tom - Not yet.
Dougie: I keep feeling someone touching my bum, but I think it’s Tom!
Harry: Dougie is a paranormal experience!

Finally, why should ITV2 viewers watch your show?
Tom: If you wanna see four wimps completely shitting themselves and running around in the dark for an hour, whilst having ghosts throw rocks at them, then this is the show for you. Ghostbusters eat your hearts out!
Dougie: If you like watching cocky losers soil their pants and cry like babies, this show is for you!
Danny: Because it’s the best one yet!

Entire Band Interview By Uk.Real.com/music in 2008

Hello McFly, lovely to meet you - how are you?

All: “Very good thanks!”

Tell me about the new single “Lies”, which you’ve said is one of the darkest songs you’ve written…

Tom: “It’s the most ambitious song we’ve ever done - it’s a step away from our normal stuff and it stands out on the album. It’s about this horrible girl who lies and who you hope crashes her car, dies and burns in hell…”

Harry (the diplomat): “Which of course we’d never really wish on anybody…”

Of course not… Is it about anybody in particular?

Tom: “Our songs are never about one person - they’re based on our personal experiences.”

Harry: “It’s fictional too - which is what we tried to portray in the video.”

Ah yes, the futuristic video. I watched it yesterday and couldn’t make head nor tail of it. What’s it about then?

Tom: “It’s set 200 years in the future, water is scarce and everything revolves around water.”

Dougie: “We end up in this dark and dingy place called Nogo City where we need pure water to power our cells…”

So nothing at all to do with the song then?

Harry: “We wanted to take a risk. The song is a new sound for us and the video doesn’t have to detail it - it just has to connect with it and I think it does that perfectly. A video that follows the song is pretty boring…”

Tom (nodding): “We wanted to make a piece of art. And anyway, most hip-hop videos are in clubs but the songs don’t relate to that…”

Dougie: “Unless it’s 50 Cent’s ‘In Da Club’…”

Or Usher’s “Love In This Club”…

Tom: “Apart from that…”

You write all your own stuff - still in a room on the third floor?

Dougie: “We wrote bits of the new album on the second floor in Tom’s house, so not far off - but we can write on ground, first or second now we’re more experienced…”

Your new album was released on your label - how did it differ from recording on with a major label?

Tom: “We’ve got creative control now, so we can do cool videos like the new one and give away our album if we want - that would never have happened on a major label. Plus we own all our masters now which is amazing. I think a lot of bands would like to be in our position…”

Do you think Mail On Sunday readers - who include my mum - appreciated getting your album for free?

Danny: “They sold 300,000 more copies than normal, so everyone was happy and we hope we got our music out to people who hadn’t heard us before - including your mum! Plus, our fans got it for free, so that was good too.”

I came to your Wembley gig and you seem to love playing live - what’s the worst gig you’ve done?

Danny (mumbling): “There was a bad gig the other day wasn’t there?”

Tom (nodding): “Really bad…”

Where was that?

Harry (the diplomat): “We wouldn’t like to say where really. Most of our gigs are great.”

Danny: “We’ve had power cuts too - they’re never good.”

You covered Jellyfish’s “Baby’s Coming Back” - are you fans of the band?

Tom: “Massively - they’re an awesome band. We were obsessed with them at one stage…”

You also did a cover of Queen on your tour - any other covers coming up?

Tom: “Most covers are ones we’re asked to do - Queen was for Sport Relief and we got asked to cover Abba’s “Winner Takes It All” for the Olympic Torch handover…”

I saw that - did you enjoy it?

Danny: “We were really nervous - I got the words wrong and sang ‘destiny’ twice…”

Dougie: “And you pulled some really strange faces…”

Danny: “I nearly lost it totally and when I sang destiny twice I thought I was going to…”

So they’re not lying on The X Factor when they say Abba week is the hardest?

Danny: “Is that what they say? No, they’re not!”

What sport could you do at London 2012?

Dougie: “Women’s 500m. Or we could be a really bad rowing team…”

Harry (laughing): “You could be the cox.”

Dougie: “I could be the what?”

Do you dance to your own tunes when you hear them on the radio?

Harry: “The other day I was walking past my kitchen and my mum was in there listening to “Lies” - it was on Radio Two. She said they kept on calling us Mac-Fly…”

Was she dancing?

Harry: “No, she was just being sweet…”

You’re not shy about getting naked in your videos, in interviews or on-stage - is it something you do together a lot?

Danny: “We’ve done it a few times but I think we’re through that stage now…”

Harry: “But it would be funny to do it in a performance soon wouldn’t it? It’s good when it’s spur of the moment.”

What’s the most random story you’ve heard about yourself?

Tom: “There was a random one on Google saying that we popped in to see Danny’s cousin on the way back from a gig in Carlisle, but we didn’t it was just some bloke saying he was Danny’s cousin…”

Danny: “What!?”

Who would you like to collaborate with in the future?

Danny: “Rod Stewart would be cool…”

Tom: “A girl would be better - someone like Rihanna would be great.”

Is there a song you wish you’d written?

Dougie: “‘Yesterday’ - that’s pretty cool.”

Tom: “I’d love to have written ‘Paperback Writer’ and the E.T. theme tune.”

What’s the most-played song on your MP3 player?

Dougie: “Harry’s is definitely that creepy Supertramp song - he used to run around the kitchen singing it.”

Danny: “Probably our stuff - we keep getting new mixes of the new album.”

Who would play you in a film of your life?

Dougie: “Kevin Bacon.”

Tom: “Philip Seymour Hoffman.”

Danny: “Will Smith.”

Harry? Much discussion ensues but Harry turns down the option of Jim Carrey and Ben Stiller. RealMusic Blog gets bored of waiting for an answer and so leaves the fellas to sort it out among themselves. Bye McFly!

All: “Bye!”

McFLY Interivew By Popjustice.com in 2005

While on tour, do you have any fairly standard rider requirements which could be blown out of all proportion by the tabloid media?
Dougie: Not really, but it's very difficult to get a good diet when you're on the road - most of our food comes from motorway service stations and hotel room service.

Do you eat petrol and trouser presses?
Dougie: No, it's just all the Burger Kings and KFCs. I don't like eating at Wimpy, though - Wimpy sucks.

Wimpy used to have a sausage in a bun 'combo' called a Big Bender. Did you ever get your mouth around a Bender?
Dougie: HAAAA!!!! They had a sausage called a Big Bender? NO WAY. That's an amazing name for a sausage! (Laughs uproariously) Awesome! They should bring that back. Put that in writing! I want the Big Benders back!

Tourbus beds are a bit like coffins. Is this a good thing or a bad thing?
Harry: A good thing, I think, because if you crash and die then you're already in the coffin, so it does save time because they could just cut the bed out and chuck it straight in the ground. But if you crash then you're screwed either way.

You've got a female string section on tour with you. Do any of them have a fiddle?
Harry: No.

Would you like them to have a fiddle?
Harry: Yes, I would like that very much.

People always promise surprises when they go on tour. Is there anything genuinely shocking in your set?
Harry: There is one thing - it's quite shocking but I think people will like it.

Does it involve nudity of any description?
Harry: No, it involves music...

That's not completely shocking, is it? You go and see a band live, and the band plays music. HOLD THE HOME PAGE!
Harry: A fair point. Perhaps it's not that controversial. You'll just have to wait and see. We're very excited about it, though.

Which band are you glad you're not in?
Dougie: I would have to say Franz Ferdinand. I actually quite like their music, but the way they come across on stage just seems really weird. With their weird short haircuts, and their marching. It's too intimidating for a young lass like me!

Are you not just intimidated because you think they might have better hair than you?
Dougie: No! Not at all. Maybe it's subconscious. (Thinks for a bit) No, it's definitely not the hair.

Are there any rituals you all do before you go on stage? A group prayer, perhaps?
Danny: We all have a big poo. All the big American acts say a prayer - McFly have a poo. But there's nothing worse than being on stage and needing to go to the toilet.

Have you ever soiled your underwear on stage? That could be a major problem considering McFly's 'trousers below arse' policy.
Danny: I've always been quite lucky, but I presume you just take a break. What else can you do? You can't poo your pants on stage!

Well you could, but you'd have to make sure you did it each night to make it look as if it was part of the show.
Danny: Yes. That would be typically classy, wouldn't it?

Dougie. Quiet, hairstyle-changing Dougie. You do a new solo song on the tour. Is it 'emo' and should the rest of the band's 'Charlie alarms' be sounding?
Dougie: I'm not that into emo! I suppose I have my emo moments, every now and again. My 'emoments', I suppose you could call them. But no, this song isn't emo! It's standard girl-and-boy stuff.

Harry. You're about to go on stage in Glasgow or somewhere and you realise you've left your hair straighteners on in London. Disaster! What do you do?
Harry: Well, I don't user straighteners now, so...

Well your iron, then.
Harry: I don't iron my clothes. And I don't cook, either.

Come on, Harry, play the game. Presuming you wash from time to time, imagine you've left a tap running in London. You do wash, don't you?
Harry: Yes, let's go for a tap. In that case, I would ring our estate agent and get them to go round to the house and turn the tap off.

You see after all that hassle, that was a really boring answer.
Harry: Hahah! Okay, then - I'd actually reveal that I was a superhero, and I'd fly home, smash through the walls of the house, and pull out the sink with my bare hands. But dramatically, that would create even more of a leak - so I'd get my bed and shove it down the pipes to stop the leaking. I would then bosh through the wall again and fly back up yo Glasgow, and make it on stage in time. Was that dramatic enough for you?

That'll do nicely.
Harry: Great!

How 'rock and roll', in terms of popular cliche, is your general on-the-road routine?
Harry: I'm hooked on Sudoko. It's not very rock and roll, is it, sitting in your room at 3am with a pen and paper? Oh well.

Is anyone allowed to shit on the tourbus?
Tom: Absolutely not! You cannot shit on the tourbus. It's liquids only.

Tom, be honest. Have you ever broken the 'Number 2' rule?
Tom: I almost did, once. You have to sit down to go for a wee on the tourbus, because if you stand up and you go round a corner it all goes everywhere. One day I sat down and then I thought, 'Hm, I need a fart', and you know how farting has an effect on these thingsâ?¦ It almost came out, but fortunately I managed to hold it back in.

Has anyone else ever done one?
Tom: No - we thought there was once but when we investigated it turned out to be a bit of chocolate.

Interview with DOUGIE By LYCOS.co.uk in 2005

You've just done a movie called 'Just My Luck', tell us a little bit about that…

Dougie: The movie's about this chick who's got lots of good luck, and this guy who's got really bad luck, and they kiss…and the luck swaps, and all sorts of crazy things happen.

This was your first movie wasn't it?

Dougie: Yeah, it was all pretty mental really, pretty surreal. You know just being on a Hollywood movie set and everything it was all just a bit strange.

So it must have been quite a big production…

Dougie: Yeah, I'm not sure how much it cost or anything, but you know, it was all just quite big, and Hollywood…and mental - we couldn't believe we were actually doing it.

What was it like working with Lindsay Lohan?

Dougie: It was alright - we didn't get to do that many scenes with her; we did more with her co-star, but she was really hot! Chris Pines though, the other guy in the film…he is the biggest legend in the world, he's possibly…I think he's Jesus, he's the second coming of Jesus…

…you really connected with Chris then!

Dougie: We're friends. He played our manager in the film you see, and he really was just the nicest guy.

Are you going to stay in touch with him?

Dougie: Yeah we are; we saw him the last time we were in L.A.

So you're in a car on the way back from the airport - are you doing lots of travelling at the minute?

Dougie: Yeah we are - mainly we've been in America and London, but we've also just finished recording in Ireland, so we've been going backwards and forwards [there] all the time…

...you're recording the new album?

Dougie: Yeah the next record - we've just recorded the main bulk of it in Ireland…

...and when can we expect it?

Dougie: Ah, we're aiming to get that out by sort of autumn time. We're debating between a few names [for the album] at the moment.

'Please Please / Don't Stop Me Now' is the new single out July 17th - it's the official Sport Relief record, how did that come about?

Dougie: I'm not too sure really, I think they approached us because we do a lot of stuff for charity anyway, and they said that they wanted 'Don't Stop Me Now' [Queen track] as the official theme tune and they wanted us to do our own version of it - so we made it a double A-side for the next single.

It's the summer, what's in store for McFly?

Dougie: Our schedule's are hectic - but to be honest I don't know what our plans are, I don't even know what we're doing tomorrow.

Festivals?

Dougie: Well, we haven't got that much longer to get all our bits done on the album, so we'll be doing that and doing the Comic Relief stuff.

On a final note - do you actually believe in luck?

Dougie: In luck? Yeah, I think we're a very lucky band.

Dougie Interviewing Tom DeLonge (Blink-182) 2005
ALL CREDIT GOES TO /laura on the MCFLY FORUMS
We all know what its like to love a band so much, it hurts. And just cos McFly are huge, doesn't mean they're any different.

"I was about 11 when I first heard Blink 182." Says Dougie, "My Aunt had Enema Of The State and played it to me. Ever since then iv been obsessed! They're funny, but really clever as well - their songs really inspire me. If they're in a magazine, I have to buy it."

Since the McFly boys have always been good to us, we thought it was about time to repay the favour. So when we heard Tom DeLonge, Blink 182's guitarist, was up for an interview, we hatched a plan.....

"You want me to interview Tom Delonge?" Dougie asked. "Me? and Tom Delonge...Oh my god."

There was a massive grin. Dougie was in.
Of course, this wasn't the first time Blink & McFly's paths had crossed.

"I met them once in a rehearsal studio, but all i could do was ask Tom for his autograph," Dougie smiles. This time around, he's fully composed and armed with a barrage of probing questions.
Over to you Dougie.....

Dougie: This may sound like a wierd question, but do you realize how cool and how much of a legend you are in some people's eyes? For instance, I swear if I wasn't for you guys, I wouldn't be where I am right now....
Tom: Its amazing to be complimented like that... That's awesome (pauses). I don't know what to say (laughs). Every once in a while people say amazing things like that but I don't like to think about it to much, I just can't really believe that we affect people like that. I try to think about my friends and my family and that makes me write the best songs that I can.

Dougie: I think the 2nd album I had of yours was a live album. I borrowed it off a friend and that night I decided I wanted to be in a band....
Tom: That is really cool, I can't believe it. I remember the first time I saw NOFX play live and I was really inspired. I just don't understand how I inspire people, do you know what I mean? That's the weird part. Its just awesome though.

Dougie: Your new album is so different to everything else you've done, will you continue to devolop your sound?
Tom: That's the goal. The main aim of anything that we do is to evolve. I think the only thing I ever try to do is be better then we were in the past. We should have done a record like this for the last album but there were time restraints. On this album, we did exactly what we wanted.

Dougie: I've always been obsessed with violence and feeling this is so clever. Which song are you most proud of?
Tom: I think anything thats different from the past songs makes me really proud. Voilence is a really cool blend of electronic music and punk rock, but feeling this is cool because its got everything from Led Zepplin to the Beach Boys in it. Each song gives us a different experience. I really enjoyed listening to I miss you for that reason.

Dougie: Your album sleeve is awesome, did you design it yourself?
Tom: No, we'd worked on the logo - the smiley face - but the packaging was done by a guy who had done our videos. We get control over everything we do which is why some of the stuff is really stupid (laughs).

Dougie What are some of your best memories of Blink so far?
Tom One of my fave things we ever did was when I got to watch a satellite launch into space in Florida, that was cool. Then we got to go to Alaska and go snowboarding on top of these hills in the middle of nowhere. We also went and played for the troops in the Middle East - that was cool.

Dougie: What is an average day for you?
Tom: There isn't an average day! When I'm at home its a mixure of hanging out with one of the companies that we own, like Macbeth shoes, working on some cool designs. other times, I'm hanging out with my family, or buying some music. But on tour its totally different. On tour, your out meeting a bunch of kids or playing these huge shows with flashing lights & explosions. Its always different.

Dougie: Are you still living in San Diego? Is it as cool as it sounds?
Tom: San Diego is awesome! Its really beautiful. Like now its completely blue, not one cloud in the sky, 70 degrees.

Dougie: Which bands did you listen to while growing up?
Tom: I listened to a lot of different stuff. I grew up on Depeche Mode, New Order and Joy Division - kind of new wave stuff. Then in Junior High School I switched to punk rock music, Now, I'm into other stuff. Like classical rock stuff, anything from The Beatles to Beach Boys to Pink Floyd or whatever.

Dougie: What music do you listen to now?
Tom: I have a blend of everything on my IPod. I've just started listening to this band called The Secret Machines - I think they're American. They sound like Pink Floyd.

Dougie: Any advice for a young band...
Tom: The only advice I'd ever give people is to do whatever it takes. Give is your all - sell all your possessions and challenge yourself to be the best and most amazing musician you can, by accepting and tolerating all forms of music. I think that in itself will make a unique difference and help you shine about the rest.

Dougie: The new album just proves as songwriters how far you've come. Do you think you've progressed.
Tom: I think we've progressed a lot, we think about music and do things a lot differently then a lot of bands out there. There are so many bands who do amazing things - like Oasis. We've got to meet Robert Smith from The Cure over there in Britain and they're still writing amazing songs.

Dougie: What is your fave Blink lyric of all time?
Tom: I don't know (pauses) let me think.... On our recent record, its really simple but it says, "are you afraid of being alone, cos I am, I'm lost without you." I think its really romantic and kind of emotional - I like it. Its cool when you're saying something really simple. but you say it in such a way that makes it powerful.

Dougie: How does the songwriting in Blink come about?
Tom: Very rarely we write stuff all together but it happens every once in a while. Usually I'll write a song or Mark will write a song and we'll make it all work together. Everyone does their own parts though, like no one tells Travis what to play on drums or no one tells Mark what to play on bass. But we'll push each other in certain directions to make the song work the way we want it to.

Dougie: Travis is such an awesome drummer, can he get any better?
Tom: I don't know. I honestly don't think it is humanly possible, he's pretty good (laughs).

Dougie: Have you written any new songs lately? What are they like?
Tom: I have a huge army of new songs and they're better then anything I've done in my whole life, I can't explain how!

Dougie: Whats is the meaning of life?
Tom: I think to make yourself happy and to make all those around you as happy as you can, now and not later.

Dougie: Thanks man.
Tom: Thanks Dougie.
